In 2018 Three Russian Scientists Arrested at Sarov Nuclear Warhead Facility for Mining Bitcoin Using SupercomputerIn 2018 three Russian scientists were arrested at a top-secret nuclear warhead facility in Sarov for using one of Russia’s most powerful supercomputers to mine bitcoin

I recently read an article about three Russian scientists who were arrested at a top-secret nuclear warhead facility in Sarov for using one of Russia’s most powerful supercomputers to mine bitcoin. This is a pretty shocking story, and it raises a lot of questions about the security of these facilities and the potential for misuse of powerful computers. What do you think about this story? Do you think the scientists should have been arrested, or do you think they should have been given a warning? Do you think this could be a sign of more serious security issues at these facilities?

  1. I guess being a Russian scientist doesn’t pay that well if you need to mine Bitcoin besides your day job.

What I do not mind is the thought of them trying out mining Bitcoin on that computer tho, I must admit it had to be tempting.

  2. This is why there’s such doubt cast on the state of Russia’s nuclear arsenal. If these bozos we’re corrupt enough to use their facilities *fucking supercomputer* to mine bitcoin rather than for research purposes etc, who knows what other shit they’ve been neglecting to do

  3. Damn, that’s some wild shit! 😂 Imagine having access to one of Russia’s most powerful supercomputers and thinking “You know what would be a kick ass idea? Let’s mine some bitcoin” I mean, props for the audacity but holy hell talk about a risky move.
1 quadrillion calculations per second is some next level shit right there. 😂

  4. That’s an interesting story I hadn’t heard of before. As I understand it a supercomputer wouldn’t be able to mine btc any more effectively than a proper mining rig though? I don’t think supercomputers have much gpu power… but I don’t know enough about it tbh

  5. Amazing story, and actually surprising it became public as it’s rather embarrassing. That’s one of the more epic Bitcoin mining setups I’ve ever heard of. That, and mining on a Nintendo Gameboy.

  6. Given the endemic nature of corruption in the russian military, this doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Still interesting, though. I wonder how many coins they were able to mine before getting caught. Even if it is a supercomputer, the exact arcitecture might not make it super efficient for the types of calculation bitcoin needs, as im pretty sure supercomputers mainly rely on CPUs.
